Detroit Woman Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison for $100,000 Social Security Fraud

On Friday morning a Detroit woman was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, for stealing more than $100,000 from the Social Security Administration and its programs, U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced.
McQuade was joined in the announcement by Resident Agent in Charge Adam Lowder, Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Detroit Division.
Vernita Alexander, 56, was sentenced by U.S. District Stephen J. Murphy, III, in Detroit, Michigan
Between 2000 and 2015, Alexander collected disability insurance benefits and supplemental security income (SSI) under one identity; at the same time, she was also using a fraudulently-obtained, Second Social security number to work under an alternate identity. Over the years Alexander also made multiple false statements to SSA, repeatedly concealing her employment from the government. In total, Alexander’s scheme allowed her to fraudulently obtain $102, 148.72 in government money to which she was not entitled.
The Court further ordered Alexander to pay full restitution to the government.
