Pennsylvania Woman Sentenced for $520,000 Deceased Payee Fraud

A 71-year-old Carlisle, Pa. woman who kept collecting her dead Mother’’s Social Security checks for 30 years was sentenced by a federal judge Monday to two years of house arrest, plus three years on probation.

Susan Stock also was ordered by U.S. Middle District Senior Judge William W. Caldwell to repay $523,623 to the Social Security Administration.

Stock was charged in May and that same month pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing public money.

Investigators said Stock never told the Social Security Administration that her mother, Lillian Jane Grady, had died in April 1983. Stock had control of her mom’s bank accounts, into which the government checks were deposited, and kept using the money for her personal expenses.

The fraud was discovered in 2013 when the Office of Inspector General tried to arrange an interview with Stock’s mom.
