A woman received six months in prison Monday for collecting her late grandMother’’s Social Security benefits for more than a decade, according to federal prosecutors.

Yvette A. Disnew, 48, of Newport News pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in May to stealing more than $152,000 from the government.

According to court documents, Disnew’s 87-year-old grandmother, Carrie Lee Mason, died April 12, 1999. Disnew never informed the Social Security Administration.

From May 1999 until December 2012 - when the scheme was uncovered - the administration deposited MaSon’’s monthly benefits into her old bank account, court documents said.

Disnew, a mother of three, is an employee of Hampton City Schools, according to a division spokeswoman. While previously a dean of students at Bethel High School, she has been transferred to an “alternative assignment,” the spokeswoman added.
