Maine Woman Pleads Guilty to Social Security Disability Fraud
BANGOR, Maine — A Millinocket woman waived indictment Monday and pleaded guilty to theft of public money.
Nancy Arlene Nelson, 57, admitted that she concealed from the Social Security Administration her ownership of a 2.27-acre parcel of land in Indian Township.
A sentencing date has not been set.
She remains free on $5,000 unsecured bail.
Nelson received more than $20,000 in benefits between April 2009 and August 2011, according to court documents.
Ownership of the land, purchased in December 2006 for $54,000 with proceeds from the sale of a house after her divorce, made her ineligible for disability benefits, according to court documents. To receive benefits, Nelson could not have had assets of more than $2,000.
She faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Nelson also could be ordered to pay $20,220 in restitution to SSA.
