Virginia Woman Sentenced for Social Security Theft
Joie Scott Whitt was sentenced in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia for the theft of more than $34,000 in Social Security benefits belonging to disabled individuals.
Whitt pleaded guilty in January to the theft of government monies and was facing up to 10 years in prison. She was given three years probation, ordered to pay a special assessment of $100, a fine of $3,000 and restitution of $34,505.85, according to court documents.
Whitt, 33, was employed as a bookkeeper for Alternative Community Experience when the money was taken. Alternative Community Experience is a community organization that provides residential support services to people suffering from mental illnesses, mental retardation and substance abuse problems.
