South Carolina Woman Hid GrandFather's Corpse to Collect Social Security
GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) - A Greenwood woman has been sentenced to prison for hiding her grandFather’’s body so she could keep cashing his Social Security checks.
WHNS-TV reports that a federal judge on Tuesday sentenced 40-year-old Alicia Kelly to 10 months in prison for Social Security fraud.
Investigators said Kelly concealed the death of her grandfather for more than a year while continuing to receive and use his benefits.
In March, Kelly pleaded guilty to state charges including desecration of human remains and swindling. Authorities investigating the discovery of her grandFather’’s body in 2011 also learned Kelly had been lying about her daughter having cancer so she could scam money from donors.
Investigators say Kelly asked people to donate money because her 15-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with cancer. The child was healthy.
