Former SSA Manager Charged with SSN Misuse

December 03, 2012

A former manager at the Social Security Administration has been charged with stealing another man’s identity and using it to make off with more than $160,000 worth of stocks.

Randolph Hurst, of West Warwick, was indicted Thursday. He appeared before a magistrate in U.S. District Court in Providence on Friday but did not enter a plea.

Messages left at listings for Hurst were not immediately returned.

Prosecutors say Hurst used his access to the Social Security Administration’s database to find an unidentified man’s Social Security number, then allegedly used it to cash out stock certificates the man owned.

Prosecutors say he spent all the money, including $60,000 for gold coins.

Hurst’s nephew, Justin Silveira, is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to a grand jury about the matter.A former manager at the Social Security Administration has been charged with stealing another man’s identity and using it to make off with more than $160,000 worth of stocks.
