Kentucky Woman Charged with Defrauding Social Security for 19 Years
A Northern Kentucky woman was indicted Thursday, Nov. 8, for defrauding federal assistance programs for almost two decades.
Lisa Michelle Hiles, 45, of Foster, was indicted on charges of supplemental security income benefits fraud, health care fraud and making false statements to federal agents. Her husband, Guy Hiles, 48, was also indicted for making false statements.
According to the indictment, from February 1993 until February of this year, Lisa Hiles concealed information and made false statements about her living arrangements in order to receive financial assistance from the Social Security Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The indictment states Lisa Hiles fraudulently collected Social Security benefit checks by falsely reporting that she had separated from Guy Hiles and that they were no longer sharing expenses. In January 2012, she told a federal agent that she and Guy Hiles had not lived together since 2000.
The Social Security’s SSI program provides financial support to disabled people with limited or no income or resources. Under an agreement between Kentucky and the Social Security Administration, Kentuckians who are eligible for SSI also qualify for Medicaid coverage.
A date for the defendants to appear in U.S. District Court has not yet been set. If convicted, Lisa Hiles faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and Guy Hiles faces a maximum prison sentence of five years.
