Florida Man Sentenced for Embezzling Social Security Funds
U.S. Attorney Robert E. O’Neill announces that U.S. District Judge James S. Moody sentenced Gary Lee Hoskins a/k/a Gary Smith (73, Auburndale) today to one year and one day in federal prison for theft of Social Security Administration funds. As part of his sentence, the court also entered a money judgment in the amount of $102,279.31, the proceeds of the offense. Hoskins pled guilty to the charge on March 2, 2012.
“The Inspector General takes these cases very serious and will continue to investigate all allegations of fraud and abuse and assist the United States Attorney’s Office in bringing violators to justice,” said Guy P. Fallen, Special Agent-in-Charge, Social Security Administration-Office of the Inspector General.
According to the indictment, Hoskins collected supplemental security income (SSI) under his own name. From December 1995 through May 2011, he also collected SSI under the name Gary Smith, to which he was not entitled. SSI is a needs based program that is administered by the Social Security Administration. It seeks to provide assistance to aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income.
