South Dakota Man Uses Multiple SSNs to Create Identities in Order to Write Bad Checks Across North and South Dakota

A South Dakota man was sentenced to more than five years in prison earlier this month for writing bad checks using 11 different identities through North Dakota and South Dakota. According to the Social Security Administration, Matthew Kurtenbach, 30, of Rapid City, was sentenced on Feb. 3 in U.S. District Court in Rapid City to 63 months in prison, five years of supervised probation and a $200 fine. He previously had been ordered by a state court judge to pay $62,363.81 in restitution. At the time of his sentencing in federal court, the restitution amount was $60,763.81. Kurtenbach was released from the Wyoming State Penitentiary on an appeal bond from an identity theft conviction in April 2008. Within a month, he opened a fraudulent checking account in Rapid City and began writing bad checks in North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the SSA. He used 11 identities to get loans and make purchases; Kurtenbach used the Social Security numbers of five of the 151 victims in the case, which include people, businesses and financial institutions. The Bismarck Police Department and Fargo Police Department were involved in the investigation, along with numerous South Dakota law enforcement agencies.
