A Brockton man convicted of a sex offense against a child in 1994 was charged Wednesday in federal court with failing to register as a sex offender.
Melvin R. Alvarado, 39, of Brockton and Providence, R.I., was charged in an indictment with failure to register as a sex offender after being arrested in Providence.
According to court documents, he was convicted in 1994 of rape and abuse of a child under 16 in Massachusetts, according to a press release from the office of U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz.
The indictment alleges that between Feb. 10 and Nov. 1, Alvarado, who was required to register as a sex offender, traveled in interstate commerce and knowingly failed to register and update his registration.
If convicted on these charges, Alvarado faces up to 10 years in prison, followed by up to a lifetime supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
