Sanctioned Medical Providers and Medical Evidence of Record
February 11, 2013
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) has the authority to exclude individuals and entities from federally funded health care programs and maintains the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities —a list of all excluded individuals and entities, also known as sanctioned medical providers (SMP). On October 3, 2012, Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Office of Disability Programs asked us to review SMPs in SSA’s medical evidence of record (MER) files. Our objective was to determine the feasibility of using the HHS OIG' List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) to screen medical evidence of record providers used by the SSA.
