Our objectives were to (1) determine the extent to which non-bank financial service providers (FSP) obtained direct access to Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance benefit payments; (2) identify demographic information of the affected individuals; and (3) determine what steps the Social Security Administration had taken to prevent the transfer or assignment of these payments to non-bank FSPs.
