Federal information systems--and the information they hold--are targets of cyber attacks. Breaches at Federal agencies have underscored the importance of securing Federal systems and protecting sensitive information.
The information the Social Security Administration houses on nearly every U.S. citizen is invaluable to would-be hackers and potential identity thieves. Consequently, the Agency's information systems may be at particular risk of attack. Given the sensitive nature of the personal information in its systems, it is imperative that SSA have a robust information security program.
