Secure Information Systems and Protect Sensitive Data

Federal information systems—and the information they hold—are increasingly becoming targets of cyber-attacks.  Breaches at several Federal agencies have underscored the importance of securing Federal systems and protecting sensitive information.  The information SSA houses on nearly every U.S. citizen is invaluable to would-be hackers and potential identity thieves.  Consequently, the Agency’s information systems may be at particular risk of attack.  Given the sensitive nature of the personal information in its systems, it is imperative that SSA has a robust information security program.  Further, protecting the SSN and properly posting the wages reported under SSNs are critical to ensuring SSN integrity and eligible individuals receive the full benefits due to them.
