NEWPORT NEWS - A woman charged with collecting her late grandmother's Social Security benefits for more than 13 years was arraigned Tuesday in federal court.

Yvette A. Disnew, 47, of Newport News stole more than $152,000 from the government, according to a federal indictment.

Disnew's grandmother, Carrie Lee Mason, died April 12, 1999, her obituary said. She was 87. Federal investigators claim Disnew failed to inform the Social Security Administration about her grandmother's death. From May 1999 until December 2012 - when the scheme was uncovered - the administration deposited Mason's monthly benefits into her old bank account, court documents said.
