SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — A federal judge has convicted a Taylorville couple of stealing more than $100,000 in Social Security disability payments.

U.S. District Judge Richard Mills found 62-year-old Vernon Klinefelter and 60-year-old Geraldine Klinefelter guilty on Tuesday. He is a doctor and she is a nurse practitioner. They were convicted of wire fraud and other felony counts after a nearly two-week long bench trial.

The Klinefelters are accused of lying and concealing information from the federal government to obtain the money.

The State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/1lvl6Bn) the couple and their attorney declined comment after the verdict. The couple is to be sentenced Sept. 4.
