Kimberly A. Byrd
Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Audit - Financial Systems and Operations Audits
Kimberly Byrd is currently serving as the Deputy Assistant Inspector General for the Social Security Administration (SSA), Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG) Office of Audit, Financial Systems and Operations Audits. In this capacity, she leads and oversees audit teams in Baltimore, Falls Church, Chicago, Kansas City, Atlanta and Birmingham. These teams examine important and complex topics such as Supplemental Security and Disability Insurance determinations and integrity reviews; SSA’s hearings and appeals process; field office operations; systems planning and implementation; enumeration and identity fraud; and financial statement reporting.
Ms. Byrd brings a wealth of audit experience to the position. She began her career as an evaluator with the Government Accountability Office and gained further experience with the Resolution Trust Corporation and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation OIGs. Ms. Byrd joined SSA OIG in 1997 and became the Director of the Atlanta Audit Division in 2001. Ms. Byrd has been the SSA Office of Audit’s expert on Social Security number (SSN) misuse and served as a member of the OIG SSN Integrity and Protection Team. Throughout her career, Ms. Byrd received numerous individual and team awards, including the Commissioner Citation and Inspector General Awards.
Ms. Byrd has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Berry College in Georgia, and is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner. She is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows Program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as a graduate of SSA’s Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program.
