Reduce Improper Payments and Increase Overpayment Recoveries

Each year, SSA issues over $800 billion in benefit payments to about 60 million people. Given the large overall dollars involved in SSA’s payments, even the slightest error in the overall process can result in millions of dollars of overpayments or underpayments.

One of SSA’s key objectives is to reduce improper payments and increase overpayment recoveries. The following investigations and reports illustrate our efforts to meet this objective.
