Connecticut Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegally Receiving Social Security Disability Benefits

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that DARRYL WILSON, 47, of New Haven, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford to six months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, the first six months of which WILSON must spend in home confinement. On November 30, 2011, WILSON pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds stemming from his unlawful receipt of Social Security disability payments.

According to court documents and statements made in court, between January 2002 and December 2006, WILSON collected Social Security Administration Supplemental Security Income benefits in the amount of $146,045.52 for documented medical conditions. During that time, WILSON used his cousin’s social security number to continue to work and receive income.

Judge Chatigny ordered WILSON to pay full restitution to the Social Security Administration. WILSON also must complete 60 hours of community service during his term of supervised release.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth A. Latif.
