A Pueblo man was sentenced this week to 21 months in prison for taking Social Security disability benefits he wasn't entitled to and was ordered to pay restitution of $42,431.

Mike Louis Torres, 40, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Lewis Babcock.

The restitution order requires Torres to pay the Social Security Administration at least 10 percent of his gross monthly income during the three years he'll be under court supervision after release from prison.

Torres, in custody since last year, pleaded guilty in January. He admitted lying to Social Security by denying he had earned income from working that made him ineligible for the benefits.

Torres is the third person from Southern Colorado prosecuted in recent months by the U.S. Attorney's Office for Social Security fraud and the second sentenced to prison. The third defendant has not yet been sentenced.
